This immersive macro photography workshop takes you through the moss-covered trails and forests of Matheran, alive in the monsoon, one of Maharashtra's most biodiversity-rich areas. Through guided field sessions, participants learn how to find, observe and photograph the incredible diversity of small life forms that emerge during the monsoon season.
THE OUTCOME
The experience goes far beyond camera settings and magnification. Together, we learn to scan habitats, understand where different species are likely to occur, observe behaviour, and use storytelling to create stronger and more meaningful images. The soft, diffused light of the monsoon offers ideal conditions for macro photography, allowing us to work patiently with subjects in their natural environment.
NIGHT TRAILS
Guided night trails reveal an entirely different side of the forest, where frogs, spiders, insects and other nocturnal creatures become active. Along the way, discussions on species identification, behaviour, and ecology help participants better understand the wildlife they photograph.
REVIEW SESSIONS
Image review sessions help participants strengthen their technique, composition and thoughtful image-making, while boosting participants' own creative approach. Whether you are using a DSLR, mirrorless camera or simply beginning your macro photography journey, at its core, the workshop is about patience, ethics and meaningful experiences in the field.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect slow walks, careful observation, countless discoveries and a renewed sense of wonder and respect for the hidden world that exists all around us.
Matheran, which literally translates to "forest on the forehead" in Marathi, sits at 800 metres atop the northern Western Ghats and offers a rare combination of evergreen forests, lateritic plateaus, seasonal streams and dense monsoon vegetation. Just 90 km from Mumbai, yet worlds apart, it is the only hill station in Asia where all motor vehicles are permanently banned, making it a living ecological reserve where sounds are entirely of birds, wind, and rain. This quiet forest atmosphere creates an immersive experience where photographers can move slowly, observe and connect with nature.
Unlike many forest destinations where wildlife encounters can be spread across vast distances, Matheran rewards slow exploration. A single fallen log may reveal multiple species of fungi, beetles, spiders and amphibians within a few square metres. Every trail becomes an opportunity to discover something unexpected.
Declared an Eco-Sensitive Zone by India's Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2003, Matheran sits within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the planet's eight recognised biodiversity hotspots. Its laterite plateau, drenched by heavy monsoon fog for four to five months a year, creates conditions for an extraordinarily rich and unique microhabitat mosaic.
The porous red laterite soil, combined with monsoon fog that lingers for months, creates a microclimate found nowhere else in the northern Western Ghats, the secret behind Matheran's extraordinary density of endemic life.
THE PLAN : ITINERARY
CAMERA + MACRO LENS
Any DSLR or mirrorless. 100mm macro recommended.
HEAD TORCH
A regular headlamp for trails. Keep a second handheld torch as backup.
FLASH + DIFFUSER
Ring flash or twin-flash recommended. A DIY diffuser is fine.
LEECH SOCKS + RAIN GEAR
Non-negotiable in July. Gumboots or trail shoes with grip.
TRIPOD
Essential for night photography and bioluminescent fungi sessions.
PERSONAL MEDICAL KIT
Basic first aid, any personal medication, and a valid photo ID.
