This immersive macro photography workshop takes you through the moss-covered trails and forests of Matheran, alive in the monsoon, one of Maharashtra's most biodiversity-rich areas. Through guided field sessions, participants learn how to find, observe and photograph the incredible diversity of small life forms that emerge during the monsoon season.
THE OUTCOME
The experience goes far beyond camera settings and magnification. Together, we learn to scan habitats, understand where different species are likely to occur, observe behaviour, and use storytelling to create stronger and more meaningful images. The soft, diffused light of the monsoon offers ideal conditions for macro photography, allowing us to work patiently with subjects in their natural environment.
NIGHT TRAILS
Guided night trails reveal an entirely different side of the forest, where frogs, spiders, insects and other nocturnal creatures become active. Along the way, discussions on species identification, behaviour, and ecology help participants better understand the wildlife they photograph.
REVIEW SESSIONS
Image review sessions help participants strengthen their technique, composition and thoughtful image-making, while boosting participants' own creative approach. Whether you are using a DSLR, mirrorless camera or simply beginning your macro photography journey, at its core, the workshop is about patience, ethics and meaningful experiences in the field.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect slow walks, careful observation, countless discoveries and a renewed sense of wonder and respect for the hidden world that exists all around us.
Matheran, which literally translates to "forest on the forehead" in Marathi, sits at 800 metres atop the northern Western Ghats and offers a rare combination of evergreen forests, lateritic plateaus, seasonal streams and dense monsoon vegetation. Just 90 km from Mumbai, yet worlds apart, it is the only hill station in Asia where all motor vehicles are permanently banned, making it a living ecological reserve where sounds are entirely of birds, wind, and rain. This quiet forest atmosphere creates an immersive experience where photographers can move slowly, observe and connect with nature.
Unlike many forest destinations where wildlife encounters can be spread across vast distances, Matheran rewards slow exploration. A single fallen log may reveal multiple species of fungi, beetles, spiders and amphibians within a few square metres. Every trail becomes an opportunity to discover something unexpected.
Declared an Eco-Sensitive Zone by India's Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2003, Matheran sits within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the planet's eight recognised biodiversity hotspots. Its laterite plateau, drenched by heavy monsoon fog for four to five months a year, creates conditions for an extraordinarily rich and unique microhabitat mosaic.
The porous red laterite soil, combined with monsoon fog that lingers for months, creates a microclimate found nowhere else in the northern Western Ghats, the secret behind Matheran's extraordinary density of endemic life.
THE PLAN : ITINERARY
DAY 1
Arrival & First Field Visit

Arrive at the hotel by 1:00 pm and settle into your rooms

After a short workshop briefing with Pratik, we'll head out for our first macro photography session.

Around 8:00 -8:30 pm, we are back at the hotel for dinner.

Post dinner at 10:00 pm, we venture back into the wilderness for our second night trail for one & half hour.
-
Return to the accommodation post trail and retire for the night.
DAY 2
A Day Full of Macro Exploration

Early morning field session through Matheran's forest trails in search of birds, butterflies, macro subjects & other wildlife.

After a walk, back to the hotel for breakfast and freshen up. Rest till Lunch time.

Post Lunch, a walk to explore different habitats till late evening.

Back to hotel for high tea and dinner.

In the evening, Pratik conducts an interactive photography session, sharing experiences on field.

After dinner around 9.30 pm, we set out for an extended night trail focused on reptiles, amphibians and other nocturnal wildlife.

At 11 pm we are back to the hotel.

The day concludes with image reviews, photography discussions and shared stories from the field.

Retire for the night after a hectic but fruitful day.
DAY 3
Final Field Session & Departure

7:00 am morning field sessions dedicated to applying everything learned during the workshop.

We focus on creating unique images in natural light, working with backgrounds, atmosphere and composition to produce more creative macro photographs.

Back to the hotel at 9:30 - 10:00 am for breakfast.

After breakfast, it's time to pack up, exchange memories and head home with fresh inspiration, new skills.

BY AIR
The nearest airports to Matheran are Mumbai (100 kilometers) and Pune (120 kilometers). You can hire a bus or taxi to Matheran from these airports. Vehicles are permitted only up to Dasturi Naka, about 2.5 km from the town, as Matheran is a vehicle-free hill station. The final stretch can be covered on horseback or if you’re fit enough, on foot.
BY RAIL
The closest railhead to Matheran is in Neral (21 kilometers). Many local trains on the Mumbai-Karjat route also stop at Neral.
From Neral Station you will have to go to Matheran by road, which is a 30-minute journey.
BY ROAD
There are multiple buses available for Neral. Also you can take a cab from Mumbai or Pune to the Dasturi point which has a parking lot.
From Dasturi point Matheran City is a 20-25 mins walk. The remaining stretch can be covered on foot or by horseback, offering a unique introduction to Matheran's peaceful, vehicle-free environment.

The biodiversity mentioned below gives an idea of what these forests hold, but Mother Nature has her own plans, and no sighting can ever be guaranteed. THE UV NIGHT WORLD
Scorpions in Matheran fluoresce brilliantly under UV light, revealing their presence across rock faces invisible to the naked eye in the dark. Bringing a UV torch after rainfall reveals dozens where you might see none.

LATERITE'S LIVING SKIN
The bare red laterite rock surfaces host an entire microscopic ecosystem, cyanobacteria, micro-lichens, and early-succession mosses visible only through a macro lens. This is one of the few places in India where rock itself becomes a subject.

THE FOG LIGHT HOURS
Between 5 - 7 am during peak monsoon, mist fills the forest canopy at exactly the height of the understorey. Light becomes perfectly diffuse no harsh shadows creating natural macro softbox conditions that last barely 90 minutes.

CEROPEGIA'S INSECT TRAP
The Ceropegia vine's flower briefly traps insects inside its lantern-shaped bloom to collect and distribute pollen, then releases them. The mechanism is only visible at macro scale, one of the most extraordinary botanical photographs possible in India.

THE FROG DAWN CHORUS
At least 6 species of frog call simultaneously from the forest edge pools between 2 - 4 am after heavy rain. No photograph required, simply standing in that soundscape rewires your sense of what biodiversity means before a single image is taken.

IRIDESCENCE UNDER RAIN
The Bombay Shieldtail snake's scales produce structural colour that only activates under wet conditions. It is almost never photographed because it is rarely encountered but when it is, immediately after rain, nothing rivals its beauty.
