everyone knows Munnar for tea plantations, very few know what survives beyond them...
munnar
life hidden beneath leaf-litter & shola bark
UPCOMING PHOTO TOURS
Munnar is often photographed from a distance. Vast tea-covered hills, drifting clouds and layered mountain ridges dominate the frame. Yet some of its most remarkable stories unfold much closer to the ground.
Among wet leaves, moss-covered trunks and pockets of ancient shola forest lives a community of creatures rarely noticed by casual visitors. Tiny frogs cling to rain-soaked vegetation, spiders patrol intricate webs and countless invertebrates emerge with the changing weather. For those willing to slow down, these mountains reveal an entirely different scale of wilderness.
This workshop is an invitation to explore that overlooked world through macro photography, careful observation and a deeper understanding of one of the Western Ghats' most fascinating ecosystems.

WHY IS MUNNAR INDIA'S MACRO PHOTO CAPITAL
What makes Munnar particularly rewarding for macro photography is not the abundance of subjects alone, but the variety of environments packed into a relatively small landscape. Located within the southern Western Ghats, it is one of the planet's ten most biodiverse regions. Every monsoon, the Cardamom Hills transform into a living terrarium, awakening hundreds of species that spend most of the year hidden beneath leaf-litter and shola bark. No landscape in India offers the same density of endemic herpetofauna within such an accessible terrain.
The region's cool climate, seasonal rainfall and mosaic of habitats support an exceptional variety of amphibians, reptiles, orchids, insects and fungi. These ecosystems continue to reveal new scientific discoveries, highlighting how much remains hidden within these mountains.
A single fallen log can host a community of fungi, beetles and hunting spiders. Moss-covered branches become miniature forests. Rain-soaked grasslands reveal frogs that spend much of the year concealed from sight. Every patch of habitat holds the possibility of discovery, not because the subjects are rare, but because they are easily overlooked.
Munnar rewards a different way of seeing. Success here is not measured by distance travelled or species counted. It comes from slowing down, paying attention and recognising that entire worlds can exist within a few square feet of forest floor. Species that remain hidden through much of the year become active, breeding cycles begin and the forest floor transforms into a constantly changing mosaic of movement, colour and texture. Every walk offers a different set of encounters, often separated by only a few metres.
Night trails are conducted safely with guide accompaniment. Participants are briefed on forest safety, leech protection, and ethical photography practice before entering.
