Coorg's real photographic wealth begins where the postcard view ends.

The district lies along the Western Ghats, a mountain system recognised as one of the world's eight major biodiversity hotspots. Its combination of high rainfall, forest cover, streams, and elevation creates conditions in which an extraordinary variety of small life can thrive.

What makes Coorg particularly rewarding for macro photography is the diversity of habitats packed into one landscape. The same forested landscape supports everything from elephants and tigers, who still move through the corridors where you're photographing snails and bush frogs...not a marketing line, an everyday reality for the estates here.

At the top of the district, on the Brahmagiri hills, a small spring called Talacauvery gives rise to the Kaveri, a river worshipped as a goddess and relied on by millions across two states. It feels fitting that a landscape credited with giving life to so much of South India also turns out to hold one of its densest reservoirs of overlooked life: an endemic red giant snail found nowhere else on the planet, a bush frog rediscovered here after a century thought lost, and pit vipers that appear on wet leaves like they were placed there for the shot.

Studies have found particularly high amphibian diversity within Kodagu's coffee landscapes, especially where native rainforest trees are retained.

Come during the wet season and the forest changes character. Frogs emerge, reptiles become active, insects multiply, fungi appear across decaying wood and the leaf litter becomes a miniature ecosystem of its own. Even a few metres of forest floor can hold more photographic possibilities than an entire landscape vista.

For a macro photographer, this is what makes Coorg special: there is no single subject to chase.
